“A Stranger I Arrived, A Stranger I Departed”: Winter’s Journey in Poetry and Song

Drawing inspiration from Franz Schubert’s 19th-century song-cycle Winterreise, Winter’s Journey in Poetry and Song, at Alphabet City, will feature three authors reading new work responding to the song. And yet, despite the distance between then and now, the writers seek to relate the material to our current political and social climate, in ways that some find startling. The participants include: Lori Jakiela, an author of four memoirs and winner of the 2016 William Saroyan Prize for International Writing from Stanford; Adriana E. Ramirez (pictured), a Mexican-Colombian writer, critic and performance poet; and Sheila L. Carter-Jones, a former Pittsburgh Public Schools teacher. Accompanying the readers will be live performances of the corresponding songs. -Lauren Ortega
